So, I usually don’t read conspiracy theories because I tend to want to buy into them. Especially ones involving aliens. They’ve always scared me since I was little.

But, anyone think anything interesting is actually gonna happen at the Mayan calendar date of 2012 (when some big thing is supposed to happen)?

Scientist friends? Anyone?

Jesus will come back, save all the heathens and send those pious god-worshipers to hell in some cruel twist of irony?

Nah… what is often sold as “the end of the Mayan calendar” (scheduled for our date 12/21/12 – an interesting coincidence in and of itself) is actually just the end of an era (the 13th B’ak’tun) in the Mayan calendar. Much like all of the hubub about the end of the world (or at least, the end of computing) that was supposed to come in the year 2000, I’m going to predict that this is, as usual, much ado about nothing.

I’ll admit a bit of fear about WWIII: East Meets West – The Final Showdown, but 2012 seems too close for us to have gotten too deep into that by then. I see that as being more on the 10 or 15 year plan.

Note: I suppose one could argue that there was a bit of a hiccup in computing roundabout 2000 with the dot-com bust, but there is strong evidence suggesting the continued existence of in-home computing well into the early 21st century, and an argument that the dot-com burst only happened because we reached a nice round number in our calendaring system doesn’t hold much water.

Not familiar with this, however I found this interesting:
