Sarah Palin! (?) @ 2008/08/29 05:39
A really conservative, un-experienced governor who is currently under investigation for trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired and who doesn’t even know what the vice president does? And she’s a creationist? Why?

Because they think women are stupid. McCain camp: “women liked hillary. women want a woman. women will vote for other vaginas, and ignore all the ways in which i hav ea horrible record on women’s rights. let’s pick a woman. close eyes, draws out of hat

Not being one of those women who is fixated on propelling a woman to the white house just because she’s a woman, I don’t understand these voters. But they’re out there, apparently.

If they wanted to go for a badass woman choice they would have done Carly Fiorina, I’d say. But I’m not a Republican-voting woman, so who knows. This just smacks me as a very odd choice. She’s a less than dazzling one.

It really bugs me that people think women will vote for women just because they’re women. Some of us can read and think for ourselves and everything, thank you.

I’m not really sure how McCain’s going to continue his “Obama’s not ready to lead,” argument when Sarah Palin’s been a governor for less than 2 years and before that a mayor of a tiny town. But she has also been a basketball star and a beauty queen (and women love beauty pagents!). I imagine Joe Biden will crush her in debates.

And Carly Fiorina is a pretty badass lady and would have been a much cooler choice.

From the msnbc.com article:

””She is exactly who this country needs to help us fight the same old Washington politics of me…” John McCain said.

re identity politics, sure it doesn’t speak well for McCain’s idea of american voters, but this does not necessarily mean he’s going to be proven wrong

which is to say not all women in the country are quite as willing to look at policies rather than personalities and demographic categories of candidates

and I suspect that swing voters are more likely to embrace these so-called identity politics than are other voters who know things about things

so

cynical and shrewd choice, is my appraisal

I don’t know who any of these people are.

I should pay more attention to politics.

more seriously, I’ve been hearing the words “Harriet Myers Jr.” bandied about. admittedly on Andrew Sullivan’s blog, but I think (after a few hours of reflection) that what I ought to have said earlier was “cynical and maladroit”

I know—I agree, Sara. Bah. Some of us have brains.

The VP debates have been something I have been looking forward to ever since Biden was announced to be Obama’s running mate. Who could McCain have picked that he wouldn’t crush? That woman is going to get eaten alive.

Or maybe I’m totally misreading this. People might love her. My mom® and I had this conversation:

Mom: What do you think of her?

Me: Lame! I don’t like her.

Mom: What? Why not?

Me: Because I don’t agree with her. You know I”m not voting Republican this election.

Mom: Well they say she’s going to kick some butt.

I have no idea where she heard this. But the idea must be floating around out there somewhere.

Sam, I think you’re right about some of the identity politics. One of the things though, I think , with McCain and women voters is that his views on abortion/contraceptives access, etc etc, are kept relatively under wraps, except when speaking to big crazy “family focused” political groups. Palin being so anti-choice herself will maybe help focus in on his views, and could end up turning a few away. I don’t know that she’ll be that huge of a net gain for women who are moderates. I mean.. McCain’s record on reproductive issues is horrific. And a lot of women, you know, are affected by that :)

Additionally, not like anyone SHOULD pay attention to Bill Kristol, but I could not be more annoyed that he (and others) are using this as evidence tha tthe Republican party is more open to women in power. Ridiculous.

Hmm. Generally yes.

In re. to the last paragraph, the other phrase I’ve heard is “Clarence Thomas II”
