that really sucks :(

my co-workers are all very smart but weird in their own ways (I certainly don’t mean to excuse myself here) and it’s not easy to relate to them in the same way it is you guys.

for instance none of them has ever played an rpg, read Watchmen or played DnD

this should give you an ideal of the cultural gap

I think it gets better when you have more work to do, if nothing else you don’t have time to pay attention to the things you don’t like

Yeah… when you feel that way five weeks (?) into a job, it’s a bad thing. It’s one thing to realize that you’re a recent college grad and so to make allowances for a job that’s a little less than perfect – and another to be absolutely miserable. There’s no sense in pounding your head against the wall.

Now that you’re here and have had a little bit of a chance to settle in it might be a bit easier to find something that’s a better fit. It took me four months after moving out here to find employment outside of school that I was happy with, and there’s no way I would’ve been successful landing the ERW gig if I had been buzzing back and forth from Minnesota and trying to move at the same time.

reading this post makes me wonder if I’m less demanding about my work environment or if I’m just lucky and have gotten a string of jobs that aren’t sort of spiritually toxic

Sigh… I should probably give it some more time anyway. Maybe I’m just hitting an unhappy homesick stage or something.

Totally possible. I hit those every few weeks I think..

On the other hand, if you think you can get something better (seems likely) I guess there’s not reason not to jump on it

Sounds like a phase or something. If I were you, I’d give it more time. But I, like Sam, think that I’m maybe less demanding of work and what I want out of it. I think most people need awhile before their jobs start to fit them – and especially with a first job right out of college, I guess I’m of the low-expectations crowd. Not that many places are going to want to give you that much responsibility when you’re so fresh – regardless of how many impressive things you’ve done during school. But I might be totally wrong on that.

If you’re really that unhappy, may as well start looking. As long as you’re sure it won’t reflect poorly on you. Is a field you want to stay in? I had always been told it looked bad if you quit something so quickly, at least in an area you want to work in (as opposed to Sara quitting a law firm job for a perfectly suited position for her). But again, I don’t know all that much about things like this.

I just read this and realized I might sound a little snotty. Apologies! At the end of the day, if it’s affecting your happiness that much – do what you gotta do and look for something else.
